LowerState 2009 Blowout - Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts (live), Audiofeen & Ruari

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Yes indeedy, Christmas time is a coming and boy oh boy have we got a treat for you on December 19th @ Deeper. Not only have we got our two fabulously talented residents (Audiofeen & Ruari) doing one of their all expansive back-to-back warmups (they actually tie themselves together back-to-back for this, it really has to be seen to be believed), we have one of the funkiest mofo’s in house & techno visiting Galway - Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts.

Ever an energetic actor in the electronic music scene, Montreal based artist Guillaume Coutu-Dumont maintains numerous collaborative projects, performing regularly in his hometown and around the world. Driven by his passion for hybrid forms of musical expression, Guillaume continues on his quest for the ultimate ham bone funk recipe with his solo project: Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts - a special blend of funk, house, techno, gospel, swing and afro-beat.

His first album FACE À L’EST was released on Musique risqué in 2007. So far, his solo outputs are available on Mutek_rec, Musique Risquée, Hartchef Discos, Floppy Funk, OSLO, Raum Musik and on French labels Circus company and Karat.

Guillaume’s initial musical forays were as a percussionist in a funk band, after which he studied latin and classical percussions in college before discovering electroacoustic composition, which he pursued further at university. It was during this period that he joined [iks], a contemporary jazz formation with whom he recorded two albums and toured for several months in Senegal. Upon his return to Montreal, Guillaume decided to focus his efforts on composition.

Influenced as much by concrete music as by techno, which he discovered one night in the midst of a lightning storm, Guillaume founded Egg (Mutek_rec, Karat, Floppy Funk), Luci (Mutek_rec, Morris Audio), Chic Miniature (Raummusik, Musique Risquée), Flabbergast (Mutek_rec), as well as the artistic collective Racam. He has toured with one or another of these projects in north/south America, Europe and Asia.

Since january 2007, Guillaume has reached European soil. Like many other, he chose Berlin as his new homebase. Traveling all around the block, he is always looking to get the dance floors grinning with guilty pleasure.

24th Oct // Lowerstate 2nd birthday // Chymera live + Ruari

Chymera

How time flies. Really. it does. Its already our 2nd birthday! We are just getting the hang of using the potty and we now know enough words to order a double rum with ice, although we cant see over the bar yet..

What a better way to celebrate then to get one of our previous guests back again. Myself and Ruari were taking notes at the back of the club in Airbound 2009 during his set and we agreed he was the best live techno act at the festival. His sound has come a long way since we had him way back in early 2008.

Taking the Detroit template as a starting point, Chymera (real name Brendan Gregoiry) crafts deep, melodic tech-house and techno that is designed as much for the home as it is for the club. Both reflective and subtle, hard-hitting and groove-ridden, Chymera’s housing of all the techno sensibilities has helped make him an in-demand producer and DJ. Since moving to Barcelona in 2008, having spent time in Costa Rica and travelling around Europe, Brendan has adopted a more considered approach to his releases, with tracks on Delsin, Figure, NRK and Connaisseur Superieur which have won him more broader critical acclaim. His latest track “Fierenix” - a peaktime dancefloor destroyer - came out on this year’s Cocoon I compilation, alongside tracks from Secret Cinema, Radio Slave and Timo Maas. His most popular track however, “Arabesque” was used by Luciano as his finale at many gigs. It was also licensed to several high profile mixes on Global Underground (by Felix Da Housecat), Renaissance (by Sander Kleinenberg) and Fabric (by Luciano). As a result of the success of the beatless mix of “Umbrella” (Ovum), he was voted 3rd Best Chillout Artist in the 2007 Beatport awards.

Check out his Bodytonic podcast or his ECDR podcast .

Joining him on the night is resident Number1: Ruari, who has had one ‘ell of a summer playing at Sonar Barcelona, Airbound Croatia, Electric Picnic and Oxegen festivals! Doors open at 11.00 and admission is €10.
