LowerState 2009 Blowout - Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts (live), Audiofeen & Ruari

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Yes indeedy, Christmas time is a coming and boy oh boy have we got a treat for you on December 19th @ Deeper. Not only have we got our two fabulously talented residents (Audiofeen & Ruari) doing one of their all expansive back-to-back warmups (they actually tie themselves together back-to-back for this, it really has to be seen to be believed), we have one of the funkiest mofo’s in house & techno visiting Galway - Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts.

Ever an energetic actor in the electronic music scene, Montreal based artist Guillaume Coutu-Dumont maintains numerous collaborative projects, performing regularly in his hometown and around the world. Driven by his passion for hybrid forms of musical expression, Guillaume continues on his quest for the ultimate ham bone funk recipe with his solo project: Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts - a special blend of funk, house, techno, gospel, swing and afro-beat.

His first album FACE À L’EST was released on Musique risqué in 2007. So far, his solo outputs are available on Mutek_rec, Musique Risquée, Hartchef Discos, Floppy Funk, OSLO, Raum Musik and on French labels Circus company and Karat.

Guillaume’s initial musical forays were as a percussionist in a funk band, after which he studied latin and classical percussions in college before discovering electroacoustic composition, which he pursued further at university. It was during this period that he joined [iks], a contemporary jazz formation with whom he recorded two albums and toured for several months in Senegal. Upon his return to Montreal, Guillaume decided to focus his efforts on composition.

Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts - Les Gans

Influenced as much by concrete music as by techno, which he discovered one night in the midst of a lightning storm, Guillaume founded Egg (Mutek_rec, Karat, Floppy Funk), Luci (Mutek_rec, Morris Audio), Chic Miniature (Raummusik, Musique Risquée), Flabbergast (Mutek_rec), as well as the artistic collective Racam. He has toured with one or another of these projects in north/south America, Europe and Asia.

Since january 2007, Guillaume has reached European soil. Like many other, he chose Berlin as his new homebase. Traveling all around the block, he is always looking to get the dance floors grinning with guilty pleasure.

Nov 14th Lusine (live) Ghostly International / Seattle, US

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

This gig almost passed me by. Time is flying and it just crept up on me. Lucky i woke up and paid attention as this one is gonna be special.  Next Saturday November 14th we will be playing host to the first ever Irish gig of electronica, IDM and ambient techno masterman from Seattle - LUSINE.

Jeff McIlwain has been producing his visceral, melodic strain of abstract electronic music as Lusine for 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff attended CalArts in 1998, studying 20th-century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out his self-titled debut as Lusine for Isophlux.

Since then, McIlwain relocated to Seattle and began steadily releasing his music on Ghostly International (home to 2004’s landmark Serial Hodgepodge as well as its successful followup remix album Podgelism), Hymen, and U-Cover. McIlwain has also contributed tracks to various compilations and remix releases on Mute, !K7 and Kompakt, and has been remixed by Apparat, Matthew Dear, John Tejada, Robag Wruhme and Lawrence.
His Language Barrier full-length on Hymen Records was something of a departure, as McIlwain focused less on jagged rhythmic detail and more on the layers of ambiance that lay beneath the percussion of his previous releases.

McIlwain has performed throughout the US and abroad, including a set at London’s esteemed Fabric nightclub, and an ambient multimedia performance at Seattle’s Triple Door in which he collaborated with video artist Scott Sunn. McIlwain has recently been involved in two film projects, co-scoring David Gordon Green’s 2008 film Snow Angels (with Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell), and scoring Kevin Bray’s 2009 film Linewatch (with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Omari Hardwick).

McIlwain’s much-anticipated latest album, A Certain Distance, was released on Ghostly International this summer to wide critical acclaim, and he has already debuted his live set at this year’s Detroit Movement festival and Sonar Barcelona. This gig is the second of Lusine’s EU tour, before gigs in Basel, Hamburg, Zurich and Berlin.

Support on the night is from Yasinski. Admission €12.
